Perugia Underground VR Experience

Perugia Sotterranea VR Experience is an archaeological and technological journey that uses virtual reality (VR) to tell the story of the thousand-year evolution of Perugia’s acropolis through a single immersive experience placed at the end of the physical visit route through the Isola di San Lorenzo. The project links the contemporary city to its Etruscan roots in the 1st century BC, offering a visual synthesis grounded in accurate historical and stratigraphic reconstructions. At the end of the walk through the underground passages, the experience lets visitors explore the “invisible city” located 15 metres below street level, from the exploration of a Domus to the re-enactment of the dramatic fire of the Bellum Perusinum.

The challenge

Making the complex urban stratification visible and understandable, moving beyond the limits of the archaeological remains seen during the walk. The project aims to recreate the original appearance of monumental structures and fragmentary residential contexts, offering a coherent visual synthesis of the underground site at the end of the visit.

The format

A multimedia experience in Location-Based Experience (LBE) format, made up of a single continuous piece of virtual reality content, strategically placed at the end of the physical underground route. It uses high-definition 4K visual and audio technology, letting the live visit close with a philologically accurate digital reconstruction

The impact

Visualising the “invisible city”: 4K technology makes the historic spaces below tangible, letting the public observe everyday life in an ancient Etruscan Domus as the perfect final highlight of the walking tour.
Impactful historical storytelling: The virtual reconstruction of key events, such as the fire of 40 BC, closes the itinerary, heightening the emotional impact and memorability of the experience without compromising scientific rigour.
Synergy with the real-world route: Placing the virtual content at the end of the physical guided tour enhances the real remains just seen, providing an effective key to interpretation and a clear visual synthesis of the whole site.
