I Am Flight is a multimedia storytelling project experienced as a Walking Immersive Tour within the historic spaces of Volandia – Parco e Museo del Volo. Created in close collaboration with Volandia, the tour is aimed at a broad audience, from families to school groups. Guided by the voice, thoughts and emotions of Giovanni Battista Caproni, the celebrated pioneer of Italian aviation, visitors embark on an itinerant journey made up of four digital stops. The experience retraces the entire evolution of the conquest of the skies, combining the charm of the real museum site with the immersive power of virtual reality (VR), from the myth of its origins to modern aeronautical technology.
Making the historical memory of aviation and Giovanni Battista Caproni's industrial legacy accessible, dynamic and deeply emotional, right in the places where it came to life. The challenge lies in turning the classic museum visit into an active route, able to connect the real historic pavilions and hangars with three-dimensional virtual reconstructions of high cognitive impact, speaking effectively to both enthusiasts and new generations.
A multimedia, itinerant format structured as a Walking Immersive Tour across four digital stations within Volandia. Using the latest generation VR headsets, visitors experience a cinematic and interactive narrative across space and time. VR technology supports seamless transitions that let visitors feel the thrill of flight and view engineering and environmental details with an extremely high level of realism.
Itinerant storytelling and connection to place: the Walking Immersive Tour format directly showcases the physical spaces of Volandia and the former Caproni industrial site. The ongoing dialogue between the real historic pavilions and the four virtual stops amplifies visitor engagement, turning the museum setting into a stage for living, dynamic historic feats.
Emotional journey and historical re-enactment: the experience condenses the key moments in the history of flight, taking the audience from the myth of Icarus, through Leonardo da Vinci and the Wright brothers, to the moments before the historic take-off of the CA.1 biplane over the skies of Milan on 27 May 1910. The powerful evocative charge includes a virtual hot-air balloon flight over the wintry Alps to observe the Blériot XI up close, right through to a timeless encounter with the modern M-346 fighter jet.
Boosting learning and appeal for schools: the high level of realism and sensory isolation offered by virtual reality (VR) significantly increases memory retention and recall of historical content. This makes the format an outstanding educational tool for students and schools, optimising the learning process through an intense and effective emotional journey.
